Use plain language. It travels farther.

Make links meaningful. "Click here" tells less than the name of the thing.

Do not fear white space. Screens need room to breathe.

Keep images few and chosen with affection.

Write as though a curious stranger has arrived and deserves a proper welcome.

And should you feel tempted to overcomplicate matters, imagine a visitor reading your page at half past eleven on a beige computer with a humming monitor and a modem that clicks like an irritable beetle.

What would help that visitor most? Usually the answer is simple: a good title, a clean page, and something worth reading.
